Powell rose to become the first African-American secretary of state under President George W Bush and had through his leadership in several Republican administrations, helped shape American foreign policy.
According to a statement released by his family via Facebook, it was announced that Powell died from complications from Covid-19. “We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American,” the family’s statement quoted by the BBC said.
