A blast in Onitsha, suspected to be a petrol bomb, has rocked Onitsha, leaving seven people injured.
Eyewitnesses said the bomb was detonated at a local restaurant in Kara area of Ogbaru, a town close to Onitsha in Anambra State, about 8pm Tuesday. They said that the bomber is a middle-aged man who pretended to be a traveller who needed a restaurant where he could eat for N150.One from a number of witnesses, said, “The bomber is a man who came to the area, mostly populated by northerners, and asked for a restaurant to eat for N150.

He was directed to the eatery where he dropped his bag and asked for food. He ate a few spoons of the food and left the place. Unknown to the people, he left behind a bomb in his bag which exploded about five minutes after the mystery man left, and injured seven people, including a woman identified as Chioma.”
Kara where the blast occurred is a commercial area where traders from the North sell their food stuff, chicken, rams and other goods. Commercial sex workers also operate from the area which shares a perimeter fence with the SS Peters Catholic Church, Nkutaku.

Responding to the incident late yesterday, the Police in Anambra State said the explosion was not a bomb blast but fuel explosion.

In a statement signed by Mr Ali Okechukwu, the State Command PPRO, the Police said, “An explosion occurred about 8 pm at Eva Water Staff settlement, Kara on the way to Atani in Ogbaru Local Government Area, Anambra State. On receipt of report, we arrived the scene and discovered that the explosion was from fuel stored in jerry-cans.”
