Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth is making a triumphant return to his musical roots with the upcoming release of his third studio album, “Uburu,” scheduled for October 20, 2023.
Basketmouth revealed this during an album listening event in Lagos on Sunday, September 10, just a month ahead of the album’s launch.
The 44-year-old entertainer reflected on his music journey way back in the early 1900s, acknowledging that he initially ventured into a music genre that didn’t quite capture the audience’s attention. This experience ultimately paved the way for his successful comedy career.
“I was experimenting with a mix of Hip Hop and Afrobeats back in 1995, but it didn’t resonate with the audience. So, I transitioned into comedy, and here I am today. It feels like coming full circle,” Basketmouth shared. In 2020, he made a remarkable musical comeback with his debut studio album, “Yabasi,” which received critical acclaim. He followed it up with “Horoscopes” in 2022, a collaborative effort with his partner, Duktor Sett, who also produced the upcoming album, “Uburu.”
Basketmouth emphasized that “Uburu” represents a significant departure from his previous two albums as he explores new creative directions. He explained, “For the first two albums, Duktor Sett and I created music that resonated with our personal vibes at the time. ‘Yabasi’ was a dream come true for me, and ‘Horoscopes’ was an experimental journey.”
With “Uburu,” Basketmouth intends to create music that resonates with a wider audience. He stated, “This album is all about the people and the vibes it brings, inshallah.” “Uburu,” which translates to “brain” in Igbo, is divided into two parts, with seven songs in each segment. The second part of the album is slated for release in February 2024.
The tracklist for the first part includes “Goalkeeper,” “Party,” “Jolie Jollof,” “Koko,” “Cover Me,” “Link Up,” and “Chasing Dreams.”
The album features collaborations with a star-studded lineup, including Bayanni, Boj, Duncan Mighty, Falz, Laycon, Lojay, Timi Dakolo, Torrian Bell, Paladin, Peruzzi, Qing Madi, Reminisce, Shatta Wale, and Victony. This promises to be an exciting and diverse musical journey for fans of Basketmouth and lovers of great music alike.
