Nigeria has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, who passed away at the age of 91.
His death, which came just hours after that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has cast a heavy pall across the nation.
Oba Adetona, one of the longest-reigning traditional rulers in Nigeria, was a respected voice in Yoruba land and a key figure in the development of Ijebuland in Ogun State.
The passing of the monarch was confirmed on Sunday, July 13, 2025, by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, in a statement released from Abeokuta.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland. Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria in general,” Governor Abiodun stated.
He described the news as a ‘double sadness’ for the country, given the earlier announcement of former President Buhari’s death. Oba Adetona’s reign, which began in 1960—the year of Nigeria’s independence—spanned over six decades, marking a period of transformation in Ijebuland.
“Under his guidance, Ijebuland witnessed remarkable strides in infrastructure and community development. His leadership not only enhanced our cultural heritage—with the Ojude Oba festival attaining international recognition—but also positioned Ijebuland as a model of progress,” the governor said.
He urged Nigerians to celebrate the life and legacy of the late monarch by upholding the values he embodied—wisdom, humility, unity, and unwavering service.
President Bola Tinubu also paid tribute to Oba Adetona, describing him as a towering traditional ruler who served with dignity and a strong sense of duty. In a statement issued by the presidency and reported by Channels TV, Tinubu highlighted the monarch’s role as a stabilising voice during times of national tension.
“Oba Adetona was a voice of reason during national crises and used his position to promote unity and progress,” the president said.
He extended condolences to the royal family, Governor Abiodun, the people of Ogun State, and all sons and daughters of Ijebuland.
“May our departed Kabiyesi find eternal rest,” President Tinubu added.
