Buoyed by the need to sustain the tempo of development in the state viz-a-viz sensitizing traders on the importance of paying revenue, Anambra state will launch a “strategic revenue drive” across three senatorial districts.

This was made known by Mr. Uchenna Okafor, Commissioner for Trade and Commerce in his address at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka; to market leaders and security agencies that will be involved in the sensitization and enforcement.

Furthermore, Mr. Okafor who also is the Chairman of the Special Taskforce on Recovery of Government Revenues stated that the drive will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, AIRS, Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA Bridge.

He also advised the market leaders to ensure transparency in generating funds for the government. Conversely, Dr. David Nzekwu, Anambra State Internal Revenue Service explained that there is no provision in tax laws for market associations to collect taxes as it is the duty of authorized tax collectors, while tax inspectors have the duty of verifying payments.

Contributing, the Managing Director of OCHA Brigade, Mr. Douglas Okafor, and the President General of Amalgamated Traders Association, ASMATA, Chief Ikechukwu Ekwegbalu, commended the initiative and assured that their men would be in full force during the sensitization and enforcement.
