In Anambra State, the primary school teacher responsible for the death of her 8-year-old pupil has been placed in a correctional facility. This incident occurred at Landmark International School in Mgbakwu, within the Awka North Local Government Area. The accused, Mrs. Faith Nwoye, faced a special court that deals with cases related to women and children in the state.
The matter was brought to court after Mr. Ojiakor Okonkwo filed a petition with the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh. The petition was directed against both the school’s proprietor, Mrs. Promise Iloh, and the teacher, Faith Nwoye, highlighting the severe abuse that led to the death of young Henry Chukwuemeka Okonkwo.
Following the tragic incident, the suspects were summoned to provide an account of the events that led to the pupil’s brutalization and subsequent death. Consequently, the case was handed over to the police for a thorough investigation.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh responded to the situation by ordering the immediate closure of the school, citing its illegal operations. The Commissioner emphasized that, upon the conclusion of the police investigation, the teacher would be subjected to further legal proceedings pertaining to violations of child rights. According to Chuma-Udeh, “As soon as the Police is done, this teacher would face other institutions against child rights. She is going to have the full wrath of the law brought upon her over her actions.”
The handling of this tragic case underscores the seriousness with which child abuse is treated in Anambra State, ensuring that such actions do not go unpunished.
