Governor Willie Obiano has revealed that the current project in Anambra State on the cargo airport would standout as the second largest runway in Nigeria following the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
This was disclosed in response to the appraisal given by Hadi Sirika, the Aviation Minister. He appreciated the administration for embarking on a cargo airport project which would in turn positively impact the economy of the state and the South East region in general.
Prior to this, Governor Obiano had stated that the Anambra International Cargo Airport which is located at Umueri, would be ready for commissioning in April 2021. He said that it would be an honour to have the minister perform the task.
“We are sure of the date because we have the money to complete it. We are not asking for any assistance, neither are we taking any loans. I am here personally to brief you on the project and to invite you to commission it for us in April 2021,” he said.
Obiano informed the minister that the purpose of embarking on the airport project was shaped by the need to provide for the economic needs of the state and its environs.
“The airport is just a few kilometres from Onitsha town, the economic nerve centre of the South-East region. It is strategically located and is a worthwhile investment,” he said.
As stated by the governor, the process of constructing the airport has been supervised and been accordance to the recommendations and guidelines of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). This procedure was taken so as to meet the standard of one of the best globally.
