Anambra State Government has commenced the monitoring of COVID-19 pandemic protocols in all the major markets in the state.
This update was made known by the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Mr Uchenna Okafor when he led his health counterpart Dr Vincent Okplala as well as officials of Africa Centre for Disease Control to monitor COVID-19 compliance in some markets in Onitsha and environs.
The markets visited were New Tyre Market Nkpor, New Parts Market Nkpor and Ochanja Market Onitsha.
Speaking to reporters shortly after the inspection, the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce Mr Uchenna Okafor said that Governor Willie Obiano directed them to ensure total COVID-19 compliance in all the major markets in Anambra state.

Mr Okafor explained that the State has through the Ministry of Health trained COVID-19 taskforce in all the major markets in Anambra state to ensure compliance and assured that they will continue to monitor and sensitize them at all times, even as he expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance in some markets visited and urged other markets that are lagging behind to emulate them to avoid regrets.

The Commissioner for Health Dr Okplala in his remarks stated that the ministry has done thorough and adequate sensitization of Ndi Anambra and other residents of the State, including putting in place COVID-19 taskforce teams in all the major markets in the State.

The Health Commissioner made it clear that most residents of Anambra state are now willingly coming out for COVID-19 test, and described it as the best way to eliminate the spread of the virus and appealed to the traders to maintain all COVID-19 protocols for the good of all.
In their various speeches, the Chairman of New Tyre Market Nkpor, Mr Okey Atuenyi and his New Parts counterpart, Chief Aloysius Umeozokwere appreciated the state government for being responsive in the management of the virus and assured that they will continue to enhance their safety mechanisms regarding COVID-19.
A few things were stationed at all exits and entrances such as; buckets of water, soaps and alcohol-based hand sanitisers in some of the markets visited, while in New Parts Market, almost every shop has its bucket of water, soap and sanitisers.
