In a significant step towards improving local governance, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission Bill into law. This new law sets the stage for the long-awaited local government elections by establishing a strong legal framework for their conduct.
The bill, which garnered widespread support from legislators, aims to empower the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) with the necessary authority and resources to manage the local government elections effectively. Once the governor signs it, the bill will become effective on June 5, 2024.
Speaker Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze read the bill for the third time, and it received broad support from the lawmakers. Yesterday, during its second reading, lawmakers expressed optimism that this development would enhance democratic governance at the grassroots level. They believe it will allow citizens to elect leaders who are directly accountable to them.
