As the vibrant Igue Festival approaches, the Association for Cultural and Economic Renaissance of Edo (ACERE) is setting the stage for an unforgettable cultural experience. In a bid to honor and reimagine the Benin Kingdom’s rich traditions,
ACERE will present its first-ever theatrical production, Igue – The Annual Thanksgiving Festival of Benin Kingdom, on November 24, 2024. The event will take place at the Agip Hall, MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos, offering audiences a glimpse into the heart of Edo heritage.
This historic production, penned by acclaimed playwright and engineer-turned-writer Omorodion S. Uwaifo, delves into the origins of the Igue Festival, tracing its roots back to the 15th century. Through an intricate narrative, Uwaifo chronicles the transformative reign of Prince Ogun, who became Oba Ewuare I, a warrior-king celebrated as Ogidigan.
Known for his remarkable feats, Oba Ewuare renamed the kingdom from Benin to Edo in honor of a savior, fortified Benin City with its iconic moats and walls, and established numerous artisan guilds that shaped the kingdom’s cultural identity.
“Igue is not just a recounting of history but a profound human story, Uwaifo shares. “It embodies the essence of thanksgiving, a tradition cherished by the Benin people since Oba Ewuare’s reign.”
The playwright, a co-winner of the prestigious NLNG Prize for Literature, has a legacy of works that spotlight Benin dramaturgy, and this production promises to be a standout addition to his repertoire.
Directing this epic piece is the renowned Segun Adefila, one of Nigeria’s foremost live theatre directors. Known for his dynamic storytelling and innovative staging, Adefila will lead a talented ensemble of performers, blending music, dance, and storytelling to recreate the grandeur of communal festivities. The performance promises a feast for the senses, showcasing the colorful customs and enduring traditions of the Benin Kingdom in a captivating and enchanting style.
The red carpet event begins at 3:30 PM, offering attendees a chance to mingle and celebrate Edo heritage before the curtain rises at 4:30 PM.
ACERE, a non-governmental, apolitical organization, is dedicated to the cultural and economic renaissance of Edo State. With a mission to modernize and empower the state through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) initiatives, ACERE is committed to fostering social and cultural advancement.
This live production of Igue is more than a theatrical performance—it is a celebration of identity, a revival of history, and a call to honor the legacy of a people whose culture continues to inspire. As December draws near, this event promises to set the tone for a season of gratitude and reflection on the extraordinary heritage of the Benin Kingdom.
