On Monday, gunmen launched an attack on the Nnewichi community in Nnewi North LGA and the Nnobi community in Idemili South LGA, indiscriminately firing shots and causing extensive damage to properties. The assailants were reportedly enforcing a sit-at-home directive in the South-East region of Nigeria.
Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police, confirmed that among the three casualties was a 22-year-old woman, who tragically was the only child of her parents.
A family insider revealed that this young woman had celebrated her traditional marriage just a week prior and was eagerly awaiting her husband’s return from abroad when she was fatally struck by stray bullets. The source recounted the heart-wrenching details, saying, “It was an incredibly devastating blow to the family on Monday. Her mother had sent her to their farm to gather vegetables for the day’s meal. Unfortunately, while she was on her way back, she got caught in the crossfire between security personnel and these ruthless criminals.”
Ikenga reported that police officers rushed the victims to the hospital, where doctors sadly pronounced the young woman and two others dead on arrival. “Two additional victims are currently receiving medical care,” the police spokesperson noted.
At this time, no arrests have been made. Ikenga announced that the state commissioner of police, Nnaghe Itam, has initiated an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators, emphasizing that efforts are being intensified to bring the gunmen to justice.
