It was indeed a “black sunday massacre” on the 6th of August 2017 in Anambra State. The two gunmen early on Sunday morning attacked St Philips Catholic Church Amakwa Ozubulu in Ekwusigo local government area of the state, during 6am mass killing scores of people and wounding several others. The gunmen when they arrived surrounded three entrances of the church having sighted the car they were looking for, they came inside the church and started shooting sporadically, 12 people were confirmed dead Ā and many wounded and are already in the hospital receiving treatment.

During his visit to the community and Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital Nnewi, Gov. Willie Obiano reassured Anambra community to go about their normal business, that from preliminary investigation submitted by the Nigerian Police, that it is an isolated case between 2 members of Amakwa community in Ozubulu living outside Nigeria, it is a tragedy they have to carry that case to Church where innocent people where killed, he reiterated that government will not relent till the the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to book. At the hospital he promised that the Government will take care of the injured hundred percent, and by the time number of deceased is ascertained that the they will also assist in the funeral. He also posited that it is an unfortunate incident that has never happened before, and not an invasion as some people are speculating; an isolated case a feud between two members of the community.
