Today marked a historic event for Ogbaru people as Gov. Chief Willie Obiano Anambra state kicked off the 2016 statewide fumigation exercise tagged; “Operation Wipe Out” at Elephant House, Obodoukwu road, New Heaven Okpoko in Ogbaru.
Gov. Willie Obiano in company of the Commissioner for Environment, Rt. Hon. Chinwe Nwebili and her Health counterpart, Dr. Joe Akabuike, emphasised on the need for regular home fumigation and pest control in Anambra state which he reiterated will eradicate malaria, Lassa and the dreaded zikka virus caused by rodents and insects from the state.
Gov. Willie Obiano encouraged Anambra citizens to support the fumigation campaign and work together with the fumigators. During the out break of zikka virus disease and Lassa fever, Gov.Willie Obiano immediately inaugrated a special team that would spray some selected parts of Anambra State as a way to flush out rodents and mosquitoes that are known to be the carriers of both the Lassa and Zikka viruses, he was confident that the “operation wipe out” would further ensure that the viruses responsible for Lassa fever and the spread of the zikka virus was kept in permanent check in Anambra state.
The choice Ogbaru for the kick off might not be coincidental because of the yearly flood that affects the area every rainy season and with the rainy season looming, may leave the residents vulnerable to health implications like malaria, lassa and zikka virus, asides from devastating effect of flood, makes the call for public and timely preventive intervention an imperative, as prevention they say, is better than cure.Weather Men predicted heavy flooding in some parts of the country.
