As the school reopens on monday officially the government of Willie Obiano has renovated over 1,500 classroom blocks to reduce infrastructural decay and provide functional learning environment for teachers and pupils, Prof. Kate Omenugha, Commissioner for Education, said on Wednesday.

According to the commissioner of Education in Awka the schools that benefitted from the renovation and reconstruction are many public schools, including those handed over to the mission by the previous administration,she said the project extends to the 21 local government areas of the state, through the State Universal Basic Education (ASUBEB).
Prof. Kate Omenugha said that Gov. Willie Obiano gave out N433 million and N300 million cheques to Catholic and Anglican schools, respectively.
“This is to combat infrastructural decay and dilapidation and we are still doing more. This is a government of continuity,’’ Omenugha said.

She said that government had also started fencing of the girls’ boarding schools in the state to enhance their protection.
“We started with 10 schools, which include Mater Amabilis Umuoji, Ojoto Girls, Uga Girls, Anglican Girls Onitsha, Oraifite Girls, among other,’’ she said.
The Education Commissioner said that the state government had given one million naira each to all the secondary schools in the state for sick-bay and sports equipment, government had also doled out N500, 000 to each 256 secondary schools and N250, 000 to each 1,044 primary schools for improvement.
“We have done a lot of training for teachers on emergency preparedness through partnership with UNICEF, and we produced handbook containing the training,’’ she said.
The commissioner said the state government had also expended over N350 million on scholarships for indigent students.
