Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State gave a positive announcement at Umuoba Anam, that his administration has drastically reduced the death rate for mothers and infants in the state through the attraction of the necessary investment in the health sector. The governor said during the closing ceremony of the first round of Maternal, New Born and Child Health Week at Umuoba Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state that maternal mortality rate in the state had dropped from 253 to 93 per 100,000 births, while infant mortality rate has also dropped from 112 to 73.He added that it was also on record that Anambra State had been declared polio free by the World Health Organization, WHO, assuring that the state government would continue to sustain all the gains.
The governor explained that his administration would continue to increase its strength of support and investment in the health sector by providing the necessary facilities that would improve the health standard of the people. According to him, the state government had provided 27 speed boats and eight functional ambulances to reach remote areas of the state to ensure rapid attention and intervention, adding that with the efforts on ground, no part of the state would find it difficult to access health care. Obiano added that the state government would soon embark on the renovation of primary health care centres across the state, in addition to the construction of nurses’ quarters at the centers.The health week involved the administration of Vitamin A supplement and de-worming tablets on children between the ages of six and 59 months, as well as routine antigens to children within zero and 11 months.
The Governor also, on Monday, rejected contributions, including advert placements from politicians, towards the burial of his mother, Mrs. Christiana Obiano, whose interment on the 20th of July., this statement was made by the state Commissioner for Information and Communication Strategy, Ogbuefi Tony Nnacheta, who advised those who intended to make any donation to the Obiano family for that purpose to channel it to Christy Obiano Foundation for the poor in fulfillment of the last wish of the matriarch of the Obiano family. Madam Obiano died last month at the age of 90 years at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi and her burial has been fixed for July 20, 2017.
