All roads will lead to The Police College in Ikeja Lagos on the 26th of August 2017 as Onitsha indigenes based in Lagos under the Onitsha Improvement Union will be celebrating Onitsha Day 2017. Igwe Alfred Achebe, Obi of Onitsha will serve as Royal Father of the day.
According to Sir A.B.C Ekweogwu, President OIU Lagos, ” Our primary objective for celebrating Onitsha day is to raise awareness and promote the consciousness of our rich culture which is embedded in the event theme ( Ife eji abu Onicha erika). The essence is to celebrate Onitsha colourful tradition, cuisine and lifestyle amongst indigenes of Onitsha and our host community Lagos.” He explained.
Chairman of the organizing committee Barrister Ernest Onyejekwe also shed light on other activities the Union has undertaken, ” We are presently working on setting up a resource centre as well as other developmental projects to help Onitsha people in Lagos state.”
Onitsha Day 2017 will also kick off the Onitsha Excellence Awards which seeks to acknowledge and celebrate Onitsha indigenes who are excelling in different fields of endeavor. Other activities to hold that day include cultural dances, age grade processions, musical performances by Onitsha born Music star Ikem Mazeli.
Also expected to attend the event is Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State and Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state, captains of industry and other dignitaries are also expected to attend.
The Onitsha Improvement Union Lagos State has been in existence since 1924.
